From the Big Apple discovering Maine

Maine is in ideal destination for a relaxing trip discovering the rural America: it’s perfect for a romantic holiday or to disconnect from the glamour sociality of the nearby New York and Boston, Maine offers 5600km of jagged coasts studded with little port towns, outstanding sequences of spectacular lighthouses, - kiosks where you can eat savoury lobsters at affordable prices, scenic inland routes and so much more.

Days at your disposal to get to know and explore this beautiful city.
New York stands at the mouth of Hudson River, on the Atlantic Ocean, and consists of 5 districts. Manhattan, the hotspot, is considered one of the most important commercial, financial and cultural centre of the World. The most characteristic places of the metropolis are the skyscrapers, like the Empire State Building, and the vast Central Park area. The Broadway Theatre is light by the Time Square neons.

Free transfer to the station and departure from the Penn Station at 10:00AM, arrival at the South Station Boston at 2:05PM (4hrs2mins).
Fetching of the rental car and trip to Portland (180km). Portland is the main and most populated city of Maine, of which it is the economical and cultural centre, although the capital of the State is Augusta; the latter is so
unprepossessing that it doesn’t either deserve to be visited. Portland is a likeable town overlooking the little islands of the Casco Bay, it deserves a half day-long visit. The heart of the nightlife in Portland is the Old Port area, between the buildings that once served as storehouses and fish stocking sites. I suggest you the touristic Lobster Co, where on the jetty under the colonnade you can taste delicious lobsters.

Departure from Portland, the route will be full of wonderful and scenographic colourful wooden houses. Stop at the Portland Head lighthouse in Cape Elizabeth, near to South Portland; it’s one of the most beautiful and most photographed lighthouses of the Maine coast, so I'd strongly recommend to pay a visit to it.

Next stop Wiscasset, with some peculiar shops of handcrafts on the main street and street food stalls, where you can stop to eat a tasty crabroll. The central part of the coast that you will travel along is full of steep peninsulas alternated to much more linear stretches of beach. I suggest to pay a visit to the Pemaquid Peninsula, an extremely lovely place on top of which stands the Lighthouse Park, a promontory dominated by the majestic Pemaquid Light Gogh. From the latter you can reach a fort dating back to the 1750s, from which you will have a wonderful view on the bay: in the distance the little white houses remind of the glimpses from “Murder, She Wrote”. Continuing by Rockland that, together with the real Rockport, is one of the main centres on the Maine coasts and surely deserves a visit. On the first days of August it’s the city that hosts the Maine Lobster Festival, a funny celebration based on...lobsters! Overnight at Rockland Harbor Hotel

Departure from Rockland to Camden, an adorable town by the sea, shrine of sail boats and shopping of maritime furnishing. I suggest you visit the Camden Hills State Park, a park that includes Mount Battie, from which you can enjoy a wonderful view over the coast with its countless spits of land, the peninsulas, the pines, the ports and, as far as the eye can see, the Ocean. Top! On the road you can stop by the Arcadia National Park. The Arcadia National Park is wonderful, a paradise for everyone: cyclists, hikers, horsemen, campers, foodies...literally everyone! It is the only natural park in New England, established in 1919 on lands donated by Rockfeller in order to snatch them from real estate speculations. In Bar Harbor, the main city of the park, you can get information about the many tracks you can cover walking or renting a bike, or about the seashores and all the activities you can do in the open-air. The park is composed by two islands: Mount Desert Island, easy to reach with a car from the mainland, and Isle Au Haut, accessible with a ferry. YOU DON’T HAVE MUCH AVAILABLE. I suggest you limit yourself to visiting only Mount Desert Island, that offers better and much more interesting views, most located on the Eastern part of the island. Overnight at ACADIA INN.

Morning at your disposal to visit the most beautiful spots of the Acadia N. P. and successively departure for Bangor, a beautiful city located 76k- far, that broadens out the left shore of the Penobscot River and is surrounded by woods. At your arrival, in order to perfectly track Stephen King and all the secrets contained in his books you only have one road to follow: trust in SK TOUR, the only tour organizer in the whole United States exactly specialized in the famous american writer. Each tour lasts 3 hours and lets you discover more than 30 spots linked to Stephen King and his novels.
